Pennie J. Carnes is a Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor, and a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist. In 2010, she received a Master of Community Counselling degree from Argosy University where she graduated with honors. She is an expert on the treatment of addiction, trauma, and sexuality. Pennie is Level II trained in EMDR, Level III trained in the Murray Method for treating complex trauma, and a Certified Multiple Addiction Therapist through the International Institute of Trauma and Addiction Professionals.
Her passion to help educate and treat men who pay for sex led her to become a co-founder and facilitator in a “John school program” in Dallas, TX from 2010 – 2015. During this time, she led a research team through the University of Southern Mississippi. The basis of the research was to better understand the profile and behaviors of sex buyers. She has taken that expertise and mapped it out into the “T.O.P.S.” program (Treatment of Prostitution Solicitors); a comprehensive program for treating sex buyers.
She is also the co-author of Shadows of the Cross: A Christian Companion to Facing the Shadows and has published numerous peer reviewed articles.
In addition to her love of writing books and creating curriculum for helping people suffering with addictions, trauma, and relationship issues, she enjoys quilting, crocheting, gardening, reading, and spending time with her husband, Dr. Patrick Carnes, and their children and grandchildren.
