Couples Intensive · Betrayal Trauma & Compulsive Sexual Behavior

Safe Harbor Intensive

When betrayal makes you doubt your own reality, healing starts with the truth.

Discovering a partner’s compulsive sexual behavior or problematic pornography use is its own kind of wound — often deepened by months or years of deception that made you question what was real. The Safe Harbor Intensive is a private, trauma-informed weekend that puts your safety and your reality first — a safe harbor where the ground stops shifting and the truth can finally be spoken. With a CSAT-trained clinician, we work toward honesty after deception, empathy and accountability, and clear boundaries that support recovery — for you, and for the relationship.

A couple in a trauma-informed Safe Harbor Intensive after betrayal

“Your pain is a normal response to a real betrayal — not a flaw, and not codependency. Healing begins when the truth is finally safe to speak.”

— The trauma-informed approach at LifeWorks Recovery

Who the Safe Harbor Intensive is for

Safe Harbor is for partners and couples living in the aftermath of betrayal tied to compulsive sexual behavior — where safety, honesty, and reality need to be restored before anything else can heal.

Betrayal trauma

For partners experiencing betrayal trauma tied to compulsive sexual behavior, sex addiction, or problematic pornography.

Ongoing deception

For couples living with the aftermath of secrecy, gaslighting, and a reality that kept shifting.

Reality restored

For the betrayed partner who needs their perceptions validated and their safety rebuilt.

Honest accountability

For couples where the partner with the behavior is ready to take real, non-defensive responsibility.

A structured path

For couples who want a trauma-informed, guided process — not a blame-and-shame conversation.

Safety first

For partners who need the nervous system to settle before the harder work of disclosure and repair.

Recovery works best when both the person and the relationship are supported. Safe Harbor often pairs with our individual Sex Addiction Intensive for the partner with the behavior — many couples do both, with a coordinated handoff into disclosure.

What we work on

Each Safe Harbor Intensive is shaped around your relationship and your pace. Common areas of focus include:

Safety & stabilization

Regulating the nervous system first, so the harder work becomes bearable rather than overwhelming.

Reality-validation

Naming what happened clearly, so the betrayed partner stops doubting their own perceptions. Your pain is a normal response to real injury — not “codependency.”

Trauma-informed disclosure

A paced, structured, professionally guided process for sharing the truth safely — never graphic — so healing rests on honesty, not more secrets.

Empathy & accountability

The partner with the behavior learns to truly hear the impact and take genuine responsibility.

Boundaries & sobriety support

Practical agreements around transparency, check-ins, and recovery that protect both partners.

Rebuilding structure

New routines and rituals of connection that slowly, reliably begin to restore trust.

Built on the STEADY Method™

Every LifeWorks intensive follows the STEADY Method™ — our original, attachment-based, trauma-informed path to healing after betrayal. Because a threatened nervous system can’t be honest, empathic, or close until it first feels safe, we steady you, tell the truth carefully, let the impact be heard, make things right, rebuild connection, and protect what you’ve regained.

S — Stabilize & Settle: safety and calm first, so the work is bearable.

T — Tell the Truth: a clinician-facilitated, structured disclosure — never graphic.

E — Ease the Impact: the hurt is fully heard and validated.

A — Address & Own: real accountability, amends, and sobriety work.

D — Draw Close: rebuilding closeness at the hurt partner’s pace.

Y — Yours to Keep: boundaries, structure, and recovery support.

For Safe Harbor, we work the full arc with a clinician-facilitated formal disclosure at Tell the Truth and dedicated sobriety and boundary work carried through Address & Own and Yours to Keep. Our approach integrates the Gottman Method, the Gottman-based Couples Addiction Recovery model, and a structured therapeutic disclosure process drawn from the specialized betrayal-trauma field. Couples receive The STEADY Workbook: Finding Secure Love Again to keep the work going at home.

What the weekend looks like

The Safe Harbor Intensive is usually scheduled across Friday evening, Saturday, and Sunday for a total of 16 or 20 hours, customized to your situation and pace.

Friday Evening

Create safety

We settle in, calm the nervous system, and begin the psychoeducation that reframes what betrayal trauma is — and isn’t.

Saturday

The emotional core

Trauma processing where the betrayed partner is heard and validated, communication safety, structured disclosure, and boundary-setting.

Sunday

Structure & aftercare

We build the structure that rebuilds trust — transparency agreements, new routines, and an aftercare plan.

We determine the right length together at your brief, free upfront consultation: the 16-hour intensive is a focused format when the situation is more contained (Fri evening + full Saturday + half Sunday); the 20-hour intensive is recommended when there’s a higher trauma load or a more complex disclosure — many Safe Harbor couples choose the longer format.

A chance to rebuild something better

Betrayal breaks something — but it can also become a rare, honest opening. Couples who do this work don’t just patch the old relationship back together; many build something stronger and more real than what they had before.

We keep what was always good between you, gently let go of what wasn’t working, and add new tools — new ways of talking, of understanding each other, and of feeling safe and close again. It’s hard, tender work, and it can lead somewhere genuinely better.

Why people trust us with this

When the stakes are this high, who you do this work with matters.

Experienced CSAT clinicians

Your weekend is led by Certified Sex Addiction Therapists who do this work every day — not generalists. We understand betrayal, compulsive sexual behavior, and the long road back, and we hold all of it with steadiness and zero judgment.

Trauma-informed, always

Betrayal lives in the nervous system, not just the story. You are treated as a trauma survivor — never “codependent” — and we move at the pace your body can bear, safety first.

Whole-person and holistic

We’re open to more than talk — breath, grounding, somatic and mind-body practices, and your own faith or values are welcome here, whatever helps you steady and heal.

Why the STEADY Method™ works

Our original, attachment-based framework follows how healing actually happens: steady the body, tell the truth safely, let the pain be heard, make it right, rebuild connection, and protect it. Nothing rushed, nothing skipped.

Your investment

An intensive is a real investment — of time, courage, and heart — in the relationship you’re choosing to fight for. In one focused weekend you can reach what often takes months of weekly sessions: honesty, understanding, and a way back to each other.

Because every intensive is built around your relationship — your story, your pace, and whether a 16- or 20-hour format fits — we set the scope and talk through the investment together at your free, no-pressure consultation. Your weekend includes a private space in Addison, all materials, refreshments throughout, and your copy of The STEADY Workbook: Finding Secure Love Again to carry the work home; comfortable lodging and dining are nearby.

Common questions

Am I “codependent” for being this hurt?

No. Your pain is a normal, healthy response to a real betrayal. A core part of this work is validating your reality, not pathologizing it.

Will disclosure be graphic or re-traumatizing?

No. Therapeutic disclosure is deliberately structured, paced, and non-graphic — designed to restore honesty and safety, not to cause new harm.

Does my partner have to be in recovery already?

Not necessarily, though we’ll assess readiness. Many couples begin the individual Sex Addiction Intensive first, or run the two together.

What if I’m not sure I want to stay?

This work isn’t about forcing a decision. It’s about restoring enough safety and clarity that any decision you make is truly your own.

Are your clinicians specialized in this?

Yes — CSAT-trained and experienced in betrayal trauma and compulsive sexual behavior.
